The Client

A leader in the biomedical revolution, this leading academic healthcare system has a long tradition of leadership in pioneering research, creative teaching protocols and effective clinical therapies. Its close proximity to the resources of the university — including the Schools of Business, Law, Humanities and Sciences, and Engineering, its seamless relationship with affiliated adult and children’s hospitals. Its ongoing associations with the entrepreneurial endeavors of Silicon Valley make this organization uniquely positioned to accelerate the pace at which new knowledge is translated into tangible health benefits.

The Challenge

Recognizing the imperative to modernize its marketing capability in the face of a highly competitive marketplace, our client charged us with recruiting a Chief Marketing Officer who would respect the legacy of the institution while simultaneously driving change and innovation in Marketing.   Additionally, following the conclusion of the CMO search, we were then retained to build out her executive team.   These positions included the Heads of Strategy, Marketing Operations, Client Engagement and Creative, among other roles.  In short, the remit was to rebuild marketing and definitively modernize the Marketing function.  

The Solution

We had a dual goal: develop a digital-first, data-driven Marketing function, while ensuring that that this leader could effectively drive change while setting the organization up for long-term success.  We arrived at a novel, yet innovative solution: Hire the internal CMO for her leadership and institutional credibility and augment her with the hiring of long-term Marketing Advisor to help build a contemporary marketing capability.   It provided for the best of both worlds. Following the assimilation of the CMO and Advisor we then proceeded to build the CMO’s “Cabinet” with a Head of Operations hailing from outside the industry with best-in-class agile marketing ops chops, a Head of Strategy out of consulting and a Head of Client Engagement from one of the premier integrated health systems in the country.  The impact this team is having on the organization is significant.
